I’m trying to layout the kitchen. The way it is now looks like someone cheaped out, cuz, well, they did. It was just an apartment and it was the 1950’s, so the owners didn’t care. I’m trying to find a good layout, and this is what I’ve come up with so far:
301 University #1 – The Kitchen
Let me know what you think…

Not bad, definitely an improvement. Sink across from stove is very nice. I can’t tell for sure, but it looks like you won’t end up with much counter space. The counter to the right of the fridge is cut off from the rest and it will end up just as a place to pile up junk mail probably. I suppose it is not possible to move the fridge down by the door because it would cover the door? Is there not enough room on the short wall for both the fridge and the range?

Good job on the planning. Dual sinks are always handy in the kitchen and the breakfast area with stools will make for a relaxing meal and a great view of the garden ;)
There are certain appliances we don’t think about when designing a kitchen. Aside from the obvious fridge, stove, dishwasher, we don’t think normally think about the microwave or coffee pot which take up counter top space. The counter next to the fridge near the dining room would work well for the microwave.
Counter top space next to the stove is nice for cooking utensils, including butchers block for knives and to have a place to set ingredients that are waiting to be added to the meal.
I didn’t see the dishwasher labeled in the diagram, where is that planned to be installed?
